A MULTIFUNCTIONAL FOOD

Cocoa is an exceptional source of poly phenols, a class of molecules that are distinguished for their high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities which interferes with the development of several chronic diseases.

For example, the regular consumption of dark chocolate reduces the risk of being statistically touched by cardiovascular diseases: Several studies show that dark chocolate significantly reduces blood pressure and interferes with the formation of blood clots, reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

These protective effects are observed only in dark chocolate containing at least 70% of cocoa paste: sweet chocolate tablets invading grocery stores and convenience stores contain only traces of cocoa paste lots of sugar, saturated fat and therefore lots of calories and therefore do not have much to do with real dark chocolate.

A PREVENTION AGAINST COGNITIVE DECLINE

Each year, about 5% of people aged 70 and over are starting to show affection by a slight decline in their cognitive functions, manifested mostly by memory lost problems.

In short terms, those memory losses just cause minor inconveniences, but they can become more disabling if the neuron function continues to deteriorate while aging.

To determine whether the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of poly phenols present in dark chocolate could ameliorate cognitive functions, a team of Italian researchers recruited 90 volunteers aged 65 to 82 years (mean 71 years) who had clinical signs of a beginning of cognitive decline.

These individuals were divided into three groups, each of them took a daily drink of chocolate containing high amounts (990 mg) intermediate (520 mg) or low (45 mg) of poly phenols. In parallel, the diet of these people was closely monitored to eliminate any other sources of poly phenols a way to better discern the effects related to the consumption of presents molecules in chocolate.

After eight weeks of treatment, the cognitive function of those volunteers was determined with the aid of a battery of tests measuring memories, for both short-term and long termed cognitive functions in their set.

The results obtained are very interesting: compared to those of the group who drank a beverage low in poly phenols, those who consumed high quantities of these molecules showed a significant improvement of memory and had superiors cognitive functions during the test results, and those results only two months after having started the treatment!

NEURONS IN GOOD HEALTH

The mechanisms responsible for these effects to remain positive has to be better understood, but it could be due to a significant improvement in the sensitivity to the action of insulin in people who consume high amounts of poly phenols.

Insulin is a very important hormone for the maintenance and function of brain cells and recent data indicate that resistance to this hormone, as observed in type 2 diabetes, contributes to cognitive decline and the development of the Alzheimer's disease.

A lot of people wonder about the meaning behind the bonsai tree. Well, let's start with the meaning of the word itself. Bonsai, first of all, is a Japanese word and could be translated as 'a tree in a pot'. The art of bonsai growing, however, did not originate in Japan but in China. It started over a thousand years ago and at that time the trees were called 'pun-sai'. The art of pun-sai growing was called penjing.

It is believed that in those days, people were trying to create the trees that look like dragons, serpents, birds and other animals. All of these forms are deeply rooted in Chinese myths and legends.

Later on, when the Japanese learned of this new art form, the meaning changed as well. The Buddhist monks that brought bonsai growing to Japan viewed these trees as a symbol for harmony between nature, man and soul. With that, the form of the trees also changed. Gone were the bizarre and grotesque shapes of twisting serpents and fierce dragons. From then on the bonsai were all about harmony, peace and balance. They started to represent all that was good.

Buddhist monks had a great influence on the art and practice of bonsai growing that has never quite disappear. Even these days a lot of books that are dedicated to bonsai gardening and are published in the western world talk about meditation and zen. They will describe how growing a bonsai requires a meditative state and how all the pruning and cutting should be approached with a zen-like state of mind.

That being said, most of the bonsai tree meaning was lost to the general public in the last couple of decades. Most westerners now look on these trees as merely a decoration; a little touch of Asia to put in our homes. I'll leave it to you to decide if that's a good thing or not.

However, if you do become a bonsai artist and start growing your own trees, instead of just observing them or buying trees that someone else has made for you, you will find that taking care of bonsai still possessed a spiritual note. You will have to connect to the tree, understand it, see where it wants to grow and then gently direct it into the desired direction. You will have to find balance between what you want and what a tree is willing to give you. You will have to find patience inside of you and allow a tree to dictate how fast it wants to develop. And throughout all this process, you might discover something new inside of you. You might discover that indescribable thing that has captivated so many. With that, you just might find your own meaning of bonsai trees.

Heritage Central Java

Central Java traced its footprints as an area that rich in culture and tradition descending from a powerful Hindu and Buddhist past, and more recent Islamic influences. The harbor city Semarang is the capital of central Java.

About four hours from Semarang there is Dieng Plateau, the site of some of the oldest Hindu temples. These 50 foot high monuments stand on a crater floor amidst sulphurous fumes.

Historical Temples in Central Java

A must see heritage Central Java is Borobudur Temple. It was built on the eighth century by the Cailendra dynasty and is located at Magelang. It stands majestically on a hill overlooking lush green fields and distant hills. It is built of grey andesite stones. The top is the Great Stupa, standing 40 meters above the ground.

The walls of the Borobudur are sculpted in bas-relief, a total length of six kilometers.Three kilometers from Borobudur there is Mendut Temple. The smaller temples of Mendut, which house the great statue of Buddha and the Pawon temple, form an integral part of the Borobudur complex. It is an ultimate heritage Central Java.

Not far from Solo is the Sukuh Temple, the pyramid Inca look-alike decorated with wayang stone carvings of Hindu origin and displayed some erotic symbols. It is located only 34 km from Solo. Another Central Java heritage is Cetho Temple is located in western slope of Mount Lawu, Karanganyar. It is a Hinduism temple and symbolized a human passion and a portrayal of human being's soul purification.

Discovering Central Java

Jatijajar Cave has beautiful tunnel with many stalagmite and stalactite. It is located near Ayah Beach, 170km from Solo. If you want to visit pre-historic museum, go to Sangiran. The museum displayed various fossils and located in Sragen. It is a good place to observe Central Java.

Solo is the symbol of Java heritage. You could visit Kasunanan Palace. It is the royal residence of King Pakubuwono in the 17th century. That palace has an art gallery exhibiting royal heirlooms, antiques, and other invaluable objects in a genuine royal Javanese atmosphere.

Another palace, Pura Mangkunegaran, built on 1757. The architecture is typical Javanese, consisting of Pendopo-an open front hall to receive guests, Pringgitan-an porch to hold leather puppet shadow play, and private apartments.

Two sets of the 17th century Javanese gamelan instruments are exhibited and played every Wednesday in the Pendopo. The palace also exhibits complete collection of masks, wayang orang costumes, leather, and wooden puppets, religious articles, and jewelry. So, get ready for wonderful Indonesia experience.
